Selling your textbook? Understanding used book conditions.

Understanding what you're getting when buying used textbooks can save you money and prevent disappointment. Here's what each condition rating actually means:

Like New

  • Minor cosmetic flaws on cover, spine, pages, or dust cover
  • Pages are clean with no marks or highlighting
  • Dust cover (if applicable) is intact
  • May have remainder marks on edges
  • Essentially looks almost new but not quite perfect

Very Good

  • Minor cosmetic issues (marks, wear, cuts, bends, creases)
  • Shrink wrap, dust covers, or boxed set cases might be missing
  • May contain remainder marks on edges (should be mentioned in listing)
  • All pages are present and readable
  • Solid condition for studying

Good

  • All pages and cover intact (including dust cover if applicable)
  • Spine shows signs of wear
  • Limited notes and highlighting may be present
  • "From the library of" labels may be present
  • Shrink wrap, dust covers, or cases may be missing
  • Perfectly serviceable for coursework

Acceptable

  • All pages and cover are intact
  • Shrink wrap, dust covers, or cases likely missing
  • Pages may have limited notes, highlighting, or markings
  • Minor water damage possible but text remains readable
  • Some dust cover damage may be present
  • Text must be fully readable (nothing obscured)
  • Most affordable option that's still functional for class
